Healthy Kitchen Hacks #10

Healthy Kitchen Hacks #10

Healthy Kitchen Hacks is a weekly series on Teaspoon of Spice. We share fellow bloggers’ and our own favorite cooking shortcuts, kitchen tricks and “aha” ideas for making healthy meals a snap.

HealthyKitchenHacks: Quick Way to Chop Garlic, DIY Compost Bin, Quick Homemade Buttermilk, Ways to Use Leftover Buttermilk, April Fool's Sushi (Fruit & Coconut Sushi) |Teaspoonofspice.com @tspbasil

Even though it’s April Fool’s Day today, all these hacks are still healthy kitchen/healthy living shortcuts  – no foolin’. (Just give a slight pass to the sushi “trick” in Tip #5 – but it’s still a healthy eat.)

So, here’s what I was hacking away at in my kitchen this past week:

1) How To Mince Garlic Super Fast
via Min @MJandTheHungryman

#HealthyKitchenHacks: Quick Way to Chop Garlic @mjandhungryman @tspbasil

I love me some garlic – I always say it’s in my blood – and apparently it’s in Min’s, too. As a garlic aficionado, she’s got a great hack for prepping a bunch of garlic, which then can be stored for at least a week in the fridge. This is such an efficient hack if you are like us and practically use garlic daily but don’t want to bother with the knife and cutting board (and odorous fingers) every single time you need it.

2) DIY Easy To Make Compost Bin
via Ashley @The Fresh Beet

#HealthyKitchenHacks: DIY Compost Bin

Because of the sobering facts behind both food waste (which is the largest source of waste in municipal landfills) and hunger (1 out of 6 Americans struggles with hunger), Ashley @ The Fresh Beet made it her New Year’s Resolution to reduce her household’s food waste starting with this super easy to make/start DIY Compost Bin.

We’ve had a compost bin for years (ironic as I have a black thumb) but reading her post recharged me to be better about our family’s food waste.

3) How to Make Buttermilk (2 Ingredients)
via Jen @Yummy Healthy Easy

#HealthyKitchenHacks : Quick Homemade Buttermilk

Since I make pancakes weekly, I almost always have buttermilk in my fridge. But I realize I’m in the minority here and for times when I’m out of it, I resort to this 2 ingredient buttermilk trick highlighted by Jen @ Yummy Healthy Easy. (Note: Vinegar also works in a pinch.)

4) What To Do With Leftover Buttermilk
via Janssen @ Everyday Reading

#HealthyKitchenHacks: What to Do with Leftover Buttermilk

On the other hand, many of us buy that buttermilk for a recipe only to then have the half empty carton sit in the back of the fridge, lonesome and forgotten. Janssen @Everyday Reading has some great ideas on how to use up that buttermilk.

5) April Fool’s Sushi (Fruit & Coconut Sushi Rolls)

#HealthyKitchenHacks: April Fool's Sushi (Fruit & Coconut Sushi Rolls) via @tspbasil

While this isn’t exactly a short cut, I had to include this “trick” for April Fool’s Day. These Fruit & Coconut Sushi Rolls are a fun twist on your traditional sushi. Despite being a trick, they’re actually pretty yummy – enjoy for breakfast, a snack or dessert!

Would you try any of these hacks? Any healthy kitchen or healthy living shortcuts to share? Shoot us an email ([email protected] or [email protected] ) or share below and we’ll try them out.

I know - I just automatically do it at this point so never thought about doing a batch of it like this ahead of time - such a great tip from Min :)

I especially love the compost bin idea! I used to have a ginormous compost pile in the woods at my old house. I've been trying to figure out how to have one in the desert. I'm afraid I'd open it to find a rattlesnake :(

Why in the world haven't I thought about mincing garlic in a big batch so I don't have to do it every day?! Genius!

Ok I have no excuse either - I def need to start a compost bin! Just egg shells alone will fill up half the container in no time...especially during this time of the year. Haha and I remember these adorable sweet sushi ;). It's perfect for today. Happy April 1st! Can't believe how fast this year is going....
